The buildings around this end of Palmer Street have been replaced, and I haven’t yet found images of the factories and buildings that were located here originally. In May 1919, the company Q P Manufacturing was registered (Daily Commercial News and Shipping List). By January 1920, the building at 21 Palmer Street was registered withContinue reading “21 Palmer Street, Fitzroy”

66 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
This site no longer exists as it is the current site of the Atherton Towers. But in 1920, the building at 66 Brunswick Street was registered as a factory for the Fortress Machine Company, which was used for making boots. The factory proposed to hire 2 males. (Fitzroy City Press, 10 January 1920, p.2). ThereContinue reading “66 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy”
24 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy (Drake House)
In January 1920, Harold Crawford registered the rear of 24 Brunswick Street as a factory for the purpose of making leather goods. The factory employed four males (Fitzroy City Press, 10 January 1920, p.2)
89 Condell Street, Fitzroy
In January 1920, Mrs Rose Simmons made an application to the Council to enable a crossing be granted at this property. It is likely that this crossing was to enable a drive way either to the side of the property or for the garage. (Fitzroy City Press, 10 Jan 1920, p.2)
71 Brunswick St, Fitzroy
This site no longer exists. I think it might have been where the Brotherhood of St Laurence now stands. The building is newer, so it could have been that the original buildings here have been removed. From at least 19 January 1907, Joseph Jennings ran a store making and selling jewellery on the site (FitzroyContinue reading “71 Brunswick St, Fitzroy”
148 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
In 1899, the location near the corner of Hanover Street was a hairdresser and tobacconist. It is funny as it is still a tobacconist in 2023!
233 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
This corner building in 1900 was inhabited by F Graham a painter and seller of artistic materials. The above article appeared in the Fitzroy Press in January 1899.
94 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
The original building on this site was removed during the demolition for the Atherton Towers in the 1960s. But at number 94, in 1899, Thomas Robson, ran a newsagent, book and stationery store from this site.
132-134 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy (London Hotel)
It would appear this site was a hotel from at least 1881 when the Fitzroy Press advertised it as the Castle Donnington Hotel. Prior to this it was the OddFellows. The London Hotel existed on the corner of Webb and Brunswick Streets in 1901, as evidenced by the MMBW map below. Then by 1899, someContinue reading “132-134 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy (London Hotel)”
130 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
This street number will likely change as I progress with the research on this property, it is however difficult to determine what the number is in today’s numbers as the site is where Atherton Gardens is, and the below article is from prior to when the street was renumbered. In July 1881, this was theContinue reading “130 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy”
