1-3 Grant Street, Fitzroy North
I haven’t really commenced on the history of Grant Street yet, however was following the trail of Benjamin Woodhead and discovered that he owned these two properties along with the whole corner south of them from the 1860s to 1902 when he passed away. For a long time the area was just land, with theContinue reading “1-3 Grant Street, Fitzroy North”
51-53 Cecil Street, Fitzroy
Originally this pair of houses were numbered 35 and 37 Cecil Street. They were built somewhere in 1867 (the Burchett Index suggests the permit for 2 3 room brick cottages was sought on 30 April 1867) by their owner Benjamin Woodhead who resided at what is now 43 Cecil Street. The houses were recorded asContinue reading “51-53 Cecil Street, Fitzroy”
47-49 Cecil Street, Fitzroy
This pair of houses was built in 1871. I am not yet sure who built them. They were built between what is now 43 Cecil Street and 51-53 Cecil Street, which were also owned by Benjamin Woodhead, a dairyman who lived at 43 Cecil Street. You can find out more on Woodhead at the 43Continue reading “47-49 Cecil Street, Fitzroy”
43 Cecil Street, Fitzroy
Back in 1865 Cecil Street had some strange numbering, but through tracing the houses and owners over the following 30 years the pattern has been determined. This house was initially number 144. The houses also didn’t run in numerical order on the street. The rate books of 1865 describe the house as a brick houseContinue reading “43 Cecil Street, Fitzroy”
27-33 Cecil Street, Fitzroy (Ellen / Peatt’s Terrace)
Back in 1863 if you had walked along this part of Cecil Street you would have found the Fitzroy Brewery! The site was owned by Henry Pinson and rented to the Parker Brothers (Rate Books, 1865). The Parker Brothers, consisted of Benjamin Parker and his partner in business William Cuffley. The earliest record of theContinue reading “27-33 Cecil Street, Fitzroy (Ellen / Peatt’s Terrace)”
Alma Street, Fitzroy
There is not a lot to show of Alma Street, Fitzroy any more. It is the back lane to a number of buildings which serve as St Vincents Hospital and various buildings which front Gertrude Street. But back in 1920, there were a number of little brick houses along this street, that had likely existedContinue reading “Alma Street, Fitzroy”
43 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
I have not conducted too much research yet on this site, but I do understand that this house was lived in by Dr Ross Soden. In March 1920, the Health Officer of the Health and Public Works Committee was F W W Morton and at this time he requested a month’s leave, and it wasContinue reading “43 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy”
Smith Street, Fitzroy
In 1837 Robert Hoddle, the colony’s Surveyor General, divided undeveloped paddocks north of the boundary of the Melbourne area into square mile allotments. The government reserved some of the land for the main boundary streets, including Smith Street, which was originally called Eastern Road, before becoming Smith Street (Gertrude Street, Jill Robertson, Fitzroy History Society,Continue reading “Smith Street, Fitzroy”
