I am still to review this location, but in researching another property, I stumbled across an advert for Dr Williams’ Pink Pills, which related back to a Mr J O’Keefe who lived at 96 Westgarth Street when he was cured from internal pain and insomnia, assuming of course that this was a real person –Continue reading “96 Westgarth Street, Fitzroy”

95 Webb Street, Fitzroy
This site is now a factory – I am not sure what it is currently being used as following the completion of the development at Greeves street (advertised on the window). Back in 1903-1905 this was the location of Mr H J Davis, Engraver and Etcher. He was born in Victoria in 1862 and afterContinue reading “95 Webb Street, Fitzroy”
27 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy
This is the site of 19-35 Gertrude Street. From “1880 until 1930 Rucker & McKenzie owned the entire block almost to Fitzroy Street. The whole section became the Caltex Service Station in the 1960s and 1970s” Following its demolition a set of office blocks were established and remain today. (Gertrude Street, Fitzroy History Society, p.70)Continue reading “27 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy”
121-123 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
This sad and sorry looking building, was once incredibly pretty. You can only just see the touches of the features this building once had along the parapet where there is an ornate dentillation with rosettes. The image below shows the pretty treatment the old windows had, three panels and a giant hood over each. TheContinue reading “121-123 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy”
131 Miller Street, Fitzroy North (Moonee Valley Aerated Water & Cordial Co)
I am guessing, but from 110-144 Miller Street, and 99-169 Clausen Street are the site; where one of the largest factories in Victoria stood (The Argus, 3 Aug 1910). According to Mike Moore, the offices stood across the road at 131 Miller Street. John Dunne “It was not long after joining the Carlton Brewery thatContinue reading “131 Miller Street, Fitzroy North (Moonee Valley Aerated Water & Cordial Co)”
190-192 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy (McColl Electric Works)
Originally this building was part of the W. and A Bennetts and Son, ironmongers suite of buildings which took out this whole corner site. The image below shows to the right the main building used by the company on Brunswick Street, and behind this building on the left down Moor Street you can see theContinue reading “190-192 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy (McColl Electric Works)”
Fitzroy North
The following is a description of Fitzroy North from 1896: “North Fitzroy may be described as the suburb of Fitzroy city. It embraces about one half the territorial area claimed by the local council, and had been a portion of Smith ward attached to the City of Melbourne. It was formerly little more than aContinue reading “Fitzroy North”
190 McKean Street, Fitzroy North

24 McKean Street, Fitzroy North
John William Baker, Evangelist of the Church of Christ lived here in 1919. He had been in the area for some time, though I am not sure whether he resided here throughout. He commenced as a Preacher for the Church of Christ, North Fitzroy in 1902, and was still there in May 1914 (The Herald,Continue reading “24 McKean Street, Fitzroy North”
101 Gore Street, Fitzroy
This place looks fascinating – I actually had never noticed it from the street given how far set back it is and the brick front fence. In 1919 Richard Morrison Bowles, Minister for the Congregational Union of Victoria resided here. (http://gazette.slv.vic.gov.au/images/1919/V/general/124.pdf page 1877).
