33-35 Church Street, Fitzroy North

Survey classification on August 9-15, 1970. No.31 & No.33 described as ‘good brick’. No. 33 was bought by Housing commission on 31 March 1970 for $12,000 and in August 1971 it was untenanted and vandalised. As of 2009 both houses appear to have survived. Taken within the block Church Street-Rae Street- Nicholson Street. Targeted by Housing Commission, Victoria for broad scale demolition and construction of high rise apartment blocks. This was opposed by residents, both tenants and owners and factories. This campaign was a turning point in public housing policy and practice in Victoria. (Text from Yarra Libraries photo)
