287-289 Rae Street, Fitzroy North (Zanoni Hotel)

“The hotel was opened in 1872 but the style in which it is built indicates that the building would be earlier then that, possibly around 1860’s.” (Hotels in Fitzroy up to 1906, Nicola A Piccola, 1971).

This building as set out below is on the corner of Rae and Reid Streets. This means it could be on this corner where it has now been replaced by two housing commission houses from the early 1970s, or it could be where the North Fitzroy Arms stands, but I think this location is more likely as the building beside it still stands and is named ‘Butcher’ which could be the same as what is written on the side of the building to the left.
