19 Brookes Crescent, Fitzroy North (Lauretta)

Looking North: “Lauretta” 19 Brookes Crescent. Bought by the Housing Commission on 4 August 1970 for $6,000. Survey: ‘repairable weatherboard’. It was tenanted by an elderly widow who had lived there for nearly 30 years. Also visible is a Laneway and No. 1 Watkins Street to the right; part of a vacant block at No.17 to left; behind roof of 28-30 Salisbury Crescent and part roof of No 32 Salisbury Crescent. As of 2009: No. 21 and No. 23 (with revised numbering) seem to be the only Brookes Crescent houses still surviving. All 24 houses in the Crescent were rated “sound” or “repairable in the surveys. It appears that 21 and 23 are now 24 and 26. Nothing remains of the pretty house below.
