Hollow, Joseph (Builder) (1839-1903)

Joseph was born in Marazion, a little seaside village in the Parish of St. Hilary, Cornwall. His father Stephen Hollow would have been about 39 years and his mother 34 years and he was their seventh child. Joseph had at least a further three younger siblings as well. (England Census 1841)

Stephen Hollow was a Mason, and had likely moved his wife Alice and the family to the town for work as most of the other children were born in Redruth, a town to which they have moved back to by the time Joseph was 11 (30 March 1851) and were living at 218 Roach Row, Redruth. The older siblings Elizabeth and Stephen had moved out. Matthew, the third oldest of the children, was now recorded as a Mason, Samuel, fourth eldest a blacksmith, John, fifth eldest an errand boy (aged 14). Joseph, the seventh was a mason’s boy, likely helping his father. The two girls (12 and 6) were at school and the youngest Emma and Susan were 3 and 2 years respectively. (England Census 1851)

In June 1864 at age 24 Joseph Hollow arrived in Victoria from Liverpool on board the Tornado. (Victoria, Australia, Assisted and Unassisted Passenger Lists, 1839-1923).

Thirteen years later, he marries Naomi Thomas in 1877 in Victoria. They seem to initially live in Rutherglen, which is where Joseph Thomas (1878), Naomi Florence Maud (1879), and Eugene Albert Raymond (1881) are born. They move to Fitzroy in 1882, which is where Eugene dies on 10 Dec 1882, aged 1 year and 8 months.

Alice Ruby (1885), Stephen Gordon (1885), William Howard (1887), Ethel Mabel Adelaide (1890) and Grace Gainetta (1892) were born in Fitzroy and Clifton Hill.

Joseph Hollow on died 12 Apr 1903 (64 years). Probate was granted on 16 June 1903.

In 1903, Naomi remained living at 103 Rowe Street, along with her daughters Naomi Florence and her son Joseph Hollow (now a ‘medical man’).
