93 Johnston Street, Fitzroy

93-95 Johnston Street, is the current location of the Coles and has a very distinct structure, so this 93 Johnston Street, may actually be placed else where on Johnston Street. The shop front design here is very similar to the current 79-81 Johnston Street, but may have been a similar shop located next to where the Coles is today (site of the Tyrian Serviced Apartments.

“Dunstone Brothers picture framing and enlarging shop was at 93 Johnston Street at least as early as 1919. Two men (the one with no hat is the proprietor Alfred Dunstan) and a small boy (Keith Bradley) are posed outside the shop. Part of the shops on either side can also be seen: Samuel Richardson, tobacconist and barber at number 91, and Edgar Sibly, optician at number 95. Many family businesses lined Johnston Street serving the local community until after World War 2 when shopping trends in the area changed dramatically.
